Climate

Korea lies in the temperate zone and has four distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. The daytime temperature in Seoul during the conference will be around 12~22 . Therefore bringing long sleeves would be recommended.

 

Business Hours

Government office hours are from 09:00 to 18:00. Most private businesses open between 08:30 to 10:00 and close in the evening. Bank hours, however, are from 09:30 to 16:30 only on weekdays.

 

Currency and Exchange rate

The unit of Korean currency is 'won. Coin denominations are 10, 50, 100 and 500. Bank notes are 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000. Foreign bank notes and traveler's checks can be converted into Korean won at a Foreign Exchange Bank and other authorized money exchanges. The exchange rate is subject to market fluctuations and on average, the exchange rate is approximately $1 to W960 as of July 2006.

International credit cards such as VISA, American Express, Diners Club, Master Card and JCB are accepted at major hotels, department stores and restaurants in larger cities.

 

Electricity

The electrical outlet in Korea is 220 volts(AC 60Hz) some hotels provide 110volt outlets for shavers. Please check the power supply before use.

 

Time Difference

The local time is Greenwich Mean Time plus 9hours.

 

 Tipping

Tipping is not customary in Korea. Service charges are often included in the bill for rooms, meals, and other services at hotels and upscale restaurants. Thus, you do not necessarily have to prepare for extra charges.

 

Telephone calls

A local call costs W70 for three minutes. To make an international call, dial the international dialing code (001, 002, 008) then the country code, area code, and finally the individual number. You may rent a cell phone at the airport.

 

Destinations Close to W Seoul-Walkerhill

Seoul Arts Center :  about 30minutes by car

Korea's first and foremost complex center exclusively dedicated to cultural and artistic themes. The Center is a showcase for the cultural sophistication of a Korean society that is proud of its brilliant cultural tradition. The complex, which consists of five buildings - Opera House, Music House, Hangaram Art Museum, Seoul Calligraphy Art Museum and Arts Library(Design Museum) - is the first to be constructed all on one site, and now may indisputably be said to be the quintessential representation of Korea culture and art scene.

The National Folk Museum of Korea:     about 30minutes by car

Located in the Gyeongbokgung Palace, it features aspects of both the traditional folk culture of ordinary people and that of the aristocracy, centering particularly on the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Devoted to the study, collection, and preservation of folk artifacts ,it is also a forum for social education on folk culture through exhibitions and classes, which are designed to provide a better understanding of traditional Korean culture.

 

Shopping

 

Antique Shopping:  Insadong – about 30minutes by car

One of the most popular places foreigners must go in Seoul. This is the street where one could enjoy various Korean antiques and souvenirs. This also is a great place to taste some of the most famous Korean traditional food.

 

Trendy Shopping:  Apgujung – about 20minutes by car

Fashionable cafés, bars, and shops are located in this place. The whole street is of latest fashion where the young usually go. This would be a great place to see the latest trend of Korean people.

 

Coex Mall – about 20minutes by car

One of the largest retail and entertainment complex. There are great options of restaurants, shops, aquarium and other attractions.

 

Nam Dae Moon Market & Dong Dae Moon Market - about 30minutes by car

Largest collection of products can be purchased in these markets from clothes, bags, shoes, imports, jewels, furniture, vessels, households, manual arts, books, sports ware, food …etc at fairly modern prices. Bargaining brings another aspect of fun to these places.
